The Role

At Last Mile Health (LMH), we dig data. Do you have experience leading innovative monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning (MERL) for global community health programs? If so, you may be our next MERL Specialist.

Our multi-country Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning (MERL) team is building a robust system of measurement, evaluation, research, and learning to drive improvement of programmatic work at LMH. The MERL Specialist will support the development and implementation of MERL plans that measure progress, outcomes, and impacts of health systems strengthening, community health workforce upskilling, and community based primary care service delivery with the Ethiopia, Uganda, and Sierra Leone programs. The MERL Specialist will ensure data quality and effective data management systems, lead data analysis, and create interactive dashboards and data visualizations to promote data use for decision making. Working collaboratively across teams, the MERL Specialist will also support the synthesis and dissemination of results to ensure effective feedback and use by the range of stakeholders supporting LMH in the global arena.

This position is open to candidates located on the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Candidates must be authorized to work in the US. Please note that our US offices are currently closed due to COVID 19 and all US-based staff are working remotely.

What You'll Do

  • Support the development and implementation of MERL plans for projects inclusive of evaluation questions, methods, indicators, targets (as applicable), analytics, reporting, and dissemination.
  • Design and perform quantitative analyses for projects; specifically mobile applications for clinical education of health workers
  • Lead implementation of data management, quality assurance, and data cleaning procedures
  • Create accessible, relevant, and timely data dashboards and visualizations to be used internally and externally for strategic decision making.
  • Engage program teams to ensure MERL plans are fit for purpose and responsive to programmatic priorities and learning needs. Share findings with program teams and collaborate to use findings to refine strategies, strengthen programs, and improve activities
  • Develop data collection tools (e.g., surveys, key informant interview guides, focus group guides) and project management processes for implementing those tools
  • Support grant development and reporting
  • Respond to capacity building needs for specific MERL skills as requested (especially data analysis, visualization, and interpretation), including coordinating and leading capacity building efforts through mentorship and/or leading capacity building sessions.
  • Contribute inputs and recommendations to LMH research agenda and MERL team strategy
  • Contribute to creation and collation of resources to build MERL capacity at LMH
  • Produce learning products that collate MERL findings across geographies or similar bodies of work for both for internal and external audiences

What You'll Bring

  • At least 3 years of experience leading MERL activities for public health and/or international development.
  • You have a Masters degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Demography, or other related fields
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative and qualitative MERL methods.
  • Demonstrated experience working to promote a learning/data use culture at previous places of work
  • Experience developing MERL reports, publications, whitepapers, toolkits, and factsheets.
  • Demonstrated experience in strengthening capacity for MERL activities
  • Ability to independently select and perform the analyses for complex data sets, including, but not limited to: descriptive statistics, multivariate logistic regression, difference-in-differences analysis, appropriate weighting of samples, etc.
  • Expertise with a statistical software package (Stata preferred) and relational databases (SQL preferred)
  • Experience in data visualization (strongly prefer experience with Tableau, Power BI or other data visualization platforms)
  • Experience in data management including data cleaning and working with databases with identifiable information
  • Facilitation of inclusive and culturally appropriate conversations with a range of stakeholders across geographies and cultural contexts.

  • You have experience in global health, digital health, health worker training, specifically on the continent of Africa.

In line with our compensation principles, this position will pay at the 50th to 60th percentile of the market to which you are employed.
