GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Deputy Program Director is responsible for ensuring successful execution of Last Mile Health’s program strategy by providing coordination and planning support to the three core teams reporting to the Program Director: Program Implementation, National Community Health Systems, and Quality and Innovation. With a focus on the Program management, the Deputy Program Director supports the Program Director to ensure program teams are coordinated and integrated, are receiving the support they need, and are communicating clearly, both horizontally and vertically. In this role, he/she proactively identifies obstacles/challenges to implementation and develops flexible solutions to troubleshoot problems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate the work of the Programs Team by monitoring each team’s work streams and identifying areas of interdependence; identify and proactively troubleshoot challenges, with particular emphasis on the Program Implementation Team
- Coordinate support to program implementation activities by engaging internal support functions, such as F&A, Ops, HR, RM&E, and P&D
- Facilitate and support Programs Team meetings, including but not limited to bi-weekly Programs Team Huddle and monthly Program Review Meetings(PRM)
- Coordinate with and support County Program Managers to ensure all action points raised at the PRM are implemented
- Travel regularly (30%) to the county to provide technical support to the County Program
- In collaboration with the Program Director, County Program Managers and unit Directors, define and set program priorities
- Generate critical program planning and management documentation, including workplans, budgets, results-based frameworks and impact targets,
- In collaboration with the RM&E Department and Program Team, develop program implementation tracking tools to track program progress
- Track team performance against these plans and follow-up to address delays or obstacles to program delivery
- Assist the Program Director in identifying and developing plans to close critical gaps, including development of management or information systems to improve Programs Team performance,
- Document program achievements, lessons learned, and best practices
- Develop and maintain knowledge management systems for the Programs Team (e.g., Trello, Google Drive, etc.)
- Lead management processes and special projects on behalf of the Program Director by convening needed team members, seeking input and facilitating team discussions
- Provide recommendations and analysis to the Program Director for approval
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in relevant field (public health, social science, management, international development); Master’s Degree preferred team
- High degree of English fluency required
- 3-5 years field experience in global health and/or programs management and coordination
- Successful and proven negotiation, communication and organization skills
- Demonstrated experience in project management in complex environments
- Experience in advancing community health initiatives, particularly in partnership with other actors
- Prior experience developing and managing budgets and program work plans
- Prior experience working in a post-conflict or resource limited setting, preferably in Liberia
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, fluency in English required
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively across cultures and backgrounds
- Generosity of spirit, sensitivity/diplomacy, and willingness to make sacrifices in service of the mission
- Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks at one time in time-sensitive manner
- High level of initiative to innovate and lead in remote and resource-limited settings
- Mission-driven with a commitment to health and social justice
- Willingness to travel to various remote program sites and between Liberia and the United States, as needed
Reports directly to: Program Director
Location: Monrovia, Liberia (with regular travel to field sites)
Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience
